Food Hacks That Actually Work!

Here are some of my favourite food hacks that actually work! Whether you’re trying to keep your herbs fresh or stop an avocado from over ripening, check out these suggestions below that are tested and true!

Keep your avocados ripe

One way to keep your avocado half from browning is to keep the pit inside the half that you are storing, brush the avocado flesh with a bit of lemon and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. This should extend the freshness of the avocado by a day or so.

Keep your herbs fresh

Keeping herbs like cilantro and parsley fresh is now easier than ever with this refrigerator trick. Trim the bottoms of your herbs and store them upright in a mason jar filled with water in your fridge. This will keep your herbs hydrated and help them stay fresh for longer.

Make the perfect sized meatballs

This may be a trick you’ve tried before. Use your small cookie scoop to make the perfect sized meatballs! After you’ve combined all your ingredients, use your cookie scoop to scoop out equal sized meatballs to ensure they all cook evenly. This cuts down a lot of the guesswork!

Make smoothie prep even easier

If making a smoothie first thing in the morning seems like a lot of work, here’s a good tip for you! Pre-bag your smoothie ingredients and freeze in freezer bags to cut down time in the morning. Portion out 3-5 smoothies at a time so that you have a weeks worth of pre-bagged smoothies that are ready to go. To start, in each bag add a small handful of baby spinach, 1/2 cup berries and some ice cubes. In the morning, pour the contents of one bag into your blender, add 1 cup of almond milk, 1 tbsp nut butter and a scoop of protein powder and you’re good to go!

Keep your lettuce fresh

If you regularly buy spring mix or boxed lettuce, remove the lid of the container and place one sheet of paper towel between the lettuce and the lid to absorb any moisture. After a couple of days, you will notice that the paper towel is soggy so replace it with a fresh sheet to keep your lettuce fresh for longer.

Make peeling hard boiled eggs easier

The trick here is to add one tablespoon of white vinegar to your pot of boiling water before placing your eggs in to boil. The vinegar makes the shell easier to remove so you aren’t left with a shattered egg shell to peel apart.

Keep your iced coffee from going watery

Rather than putting regular ice cubes into your iced coffee, brew a strong batch of coffee, pour into ice cube tray and freeze to make coffee ice cubes. This way, you will not water down your iced coffee because you are using coffee ice cubes instead!
